Trekking the Old East-West Trade Route

The ancient east-west trade route – walking through history!

Beginning in Paro, you will travel the old east-west trade route, visit the capital of Thimphu, sightsee, and tour the Traditional Indigenous Hospital with Dr. Dungtso.

You’ll enjoy several days of hiking and driving, stopping at dzongs, village temples, and even attending a special shamanic ceremony in a local village. Lobeysa, Longtey, the Gangtey Valley, Jakar, Punakha, and Bumthang are all on this journey. And you’ll stay in small country hotels, charming local mountain lodges, and campsites along the way.

Day 1 Early morning arrival in Bhutan. Explore Paro. LD
Day 2 Tour Paro. Visit Ta Dzong, National Museum, Kyichu & Drugyal Dzong. BLD
Day 3 Drive to Thimpu. Visit the Traditional Indigenous Hospital, Textile Museum, & Tashicho Dzong. BLD
Day 4 Visit Paper Factory, National Museum, School for Arts and Crafts, Cherit Temple. BLD
Day 5 Drive to Punakha exploring the countryside along the way. BLD
Day 6 Today start your trek from Khelekha, an hour’s drive from Punakha. Hike into the beautiful Gangtey Valley. BLD
Day 7 Today trek over Gechela Pass into Longtey. In Longtey, drive to Tongsa where you will stay the night. BLD
Day 8 Drive an hour to Kuengarapten where you will start a several day trek. Tonight camp at a beautiful site called Zamthang overlooking Kuengarapten and other nearby villages. BLD
Day 9 Today hike up a steep grade over Tongela Pass. BLD
Day 10 Hike downhill today to Chumey Valley. Overnight in Gayetsa. BLD
Day 11 After stopping at Tharpaling Monastery, hike over the Kekala Pass toward Jakar, stopping at Lame Gompa to rest. You will be met and driven to the lovely Mountain Lodge for the night. BLD
Day 12 Explore Bumthang Valley, the valley of temples. Wangdichholing Palace, Jambey Lhakhang and more. BLD
Day 13 Drive back to Punkha, stopping in Wangdi for lunch. Arriving in Punkha visit Punakha Dzong & Temple of the Madman. BLD
Day 14 Drive back to Paro, stopping at a local farmhouse and Tachogang temple. BLD
Day 15 Depart Bhutan. B
